Night of a Thousand Darlas: A Novel Kindle Edition

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 178 ratings

From the author of Penelope in Retrograde comes the sparkling story of three generations of women, each trying to live out their own dreams without breaking a leg in the process.

Liza Day’s mother isn’t dead, but leave it to Darla Day to throw herself a funeral anyway. It’s the kind of attention grab Liza left behind to build a quiet life for herself and her rebellious teenage daughter, Avery. But between her students discovering her old daytime TV show—putting her teaching job at risk—and her mother’s unexpected funeral invitation, Liza’s life feels truly like a soap opera.

When Liza returns to her family’s historic Day Ranch for her mother’s premature farewell, she’s not sure what to expect. Darla’s always been known for eccentricities, both on- and off-screen. Thankfully, Liza has her siblings to help navigate Mom’s antics, which include everyone dressing as one of Darla’s many iconic film characters, a harem of white rabbits, and one surprise guest: Liza’s former costar and Avery’s father, Scotty.

The more time Liza and Avery spend on the ranch, the more Liza realizes that it might be time to trade in the scripted life she thought she wanted, for a leading role in the family she’s always needed.

From the Publisher

A lovely day for a fake funeral.

Quirky family members, vintage Hollywood glamour, a California ranch, white rabbits, and a pink elephant - what’s not to love?! This novel is a delightful escape.

I adored Brooke Abrams’ first novel- read it if you haven’t!- so it was a no brainer that I give Night of a Thousand Darlas a go. It was funny, sweet, and everything I wanted it to be. I love each of the characters, and their development and plot unfolding was spectacular. I only wish the book or the epilogue was longer. I wish I could read this for the first time all over again.

Well, it all worked out in the end. I mostly enjoyed this book. The characters were interesting and the "funeral while I'm alive" is an idea I appreciate.

    My review without spoilers:
I love when a book brings you into the characters story and almost immediately you feel like you are a part of their lives and need to know what's happening. That's exactly what this story did for me. I instantly felt like Liza was my best friend and I was hearing her tell me about everything in her life.
One twist alter another had me in such a hold and opened up so much more of the story than I was imagining! All of the characters here truly have their own story within this book. You get to see into the depths of each one and then they are wrapped up with a big beautiful bow, no details left aside.
I laughed, I cried, and felt that this story brought on every element possible. I love how the heavy topics shared in this book were done so in such a delicate and thoughtful way while still showing the real depths of them (trying not to spoil here). The emotions of real life were steady throughout the book, but I truly felt like I was learning from the characters towards the end of the story and gaining perspective for my own life.
    Highly recommend!!!

This book and story line was written to have a variety of relatable aspects. Between parenting a teen, a sort of distant relationship with a parent, each sibling having a certain role, and just some very awkward and embarrassing moments, this book made me laugh and gave me some comfort. Life is hard and this was a good book that talks about life’s challenges. Was everything relatable? No. But at the end of the day it’s a book with a good story. And this author makes her MC’s so funny, sarcastic, and has tons of embarrassing moments, which I love!

I enjoyed this book. The main character is Liza, former teen actress and part of the “Hollywood royalty” Day family. She receives an invitation to her mother Darla’s funeral, sent by Darla herself who is very much alive. Liza, along with her siblings Kat and Miles, has to figure out what’s going on with her mother while also balancing her own work drama and relationship with her daughter. This book was funny and entertaining while also dealing with more serious family and relationship issues. I think some aspects felt a little rushed and could have been better developed (for example, Liza’s work situation and her relationship with Scotty) but overall this was an enjoyable read.

I have to say that this book was better than expected.
My rating is 4,5⭐️ rounded up to 5 ⭐️.

We have the story of three generations of women with a side of second chance romance.
Darla is a former actress and she send invitations to her funeral, even if she is still alive.
The story is told from her youngest daughter Liza’s perspective. She is a single mother co-parenting her teenage daughter Avery. Liza and her ex met when they filmed a soap opera together. There are some chapters with flashbacks from that period.

I liked the writing a lot, the plot felt realistic and the interactions between the siblings were funny.

The romance part was unexpected for me but I loved it, even if it was a bit in the background. I am a sucker for happy endings.

I received a complimentary advance copy of this book from Netgalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Publishing date is 21th January 2025.

Thanks to NetGalley for the chance to read The Night of a Thousand Darlas.

When Old Hollywood starlet Darla Day announces her funeral, it's the last thing her daughter Lizzy wants to deal with. It's just like her melodramatic mother to throw herself a party when Lizzy is in the middle of a crisis--losing her teaching job and fighting with her teenage daughter, Avery. But when the Day family convenes at historic Day Ranch, the reasons for this event get more complicated as three generations of Days collide.

This book is full of Brooke's signature witty, insightful writing. She does such an amazing job of creating loving, memorable characters, and it's also incredibly fun! You don't want to miss it.
