The memoir by the doctor who became a beacon of hope for millions through the COVID pandemic, and whose six-decade career in high-level public service put him in the room with seven presidents
“An eventful autobiography [and] a classic American story…Gripping.”—The Washington Post
“One of the most consequential and most prominent [careers] in American medicine in the past fifty years.”—Jerome Groopman, The New Yorker
Anthony Fauci is arguably the most famous – and most revered – doctor in the world today. His role guiding America sanely and calmly through Covid (and through the torrents of Trump) earned him the trust of millions during one of the most terrifying periods in modern American history, but this was only the most recent of the global epidemics in which Dr. Fauci played a major role. His crucial role in researching HIV and bringing AIDS into sympathetic public view and his leadership in navigating the Ebola, SARS, West Nile, and anthrax crises, make him truly an American hero.
His memoir reaches back to his boyhood in Brooklyn, New York, and carries through decades of caring for critically ill patients, navigating the whirlpools of Washington politics, and behind-the-scenes advising and negotiating with seven presidents on key issues from global AIDS relief to infectious disease preparedness at home. ON CALL will be an inspiration for readers who admire and are grateful to him and for those who want to emulate him in public service. He is the embodiment of “speaking truth to power,” with dignity and results.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 15, 2024I thoroughly enjoyed this book! What a brilliant scientist, doctor, and public servant! The fact that Fauci has successfully helped the United States through various deadly viruses and pandemic, under 7 Administrations, is a testament to his brilliance and dedication as a public servant. I enjoyed reading about his upbringing and family history. And, as he chronicled his life experiences as a brilliant scientist, it was simply captivating.
This book helps to understand the grueling world that scientists endure to solve health problems that threaten human existence.
The chapter on the Covid-19 pandemic was very eye-opening. So much excellence information in that chapter and the reality on how the government made the pandemic a political fiasco amidst lives being lost, coupled with the poor health communication because the various governmental agencies grappled with effective communication/ messaging amidst the struggle to control the spread of the virus.
Then, the mis- disinformation that affected communication during the Covid-19 pandemic was definitely a struggle for this brilliant scientist. I am a communication practitioner/journalist by trade, and the social media mis- disinformation definitely drove me nuts, far less a brilliant scientist/public servant working tirelessly to get us out of a global pandemic. I respect and appreciate Dr. Fauci for helping save lives!
Although lots of medical terminology you may not understand, this is an excellent book, with actual news events and research studies to support the experiences of this brilliant doctor. I definitely recommend reading this book!
I would give this book 10 stars if I could.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 22, 2024This powerful book jumped into my hands the moment it was published, as I have admired Dr. Fauci for over 40 years. I was surprised—and a little disappointed—to find that this book is not so much an autobiography of Anthony Fauci but rather an account of his professional involvement as doctor and immunologist responsible for protecting the health of the American public.
We do, however, learn a little about this man who was born a few days after I myself was, thus sharing the same crises and historic events of the 20th and 21st centuries. Anthony was born into a tightknit Italian Catholic family in Brooklyn, New York. As a child, he was outstanding in practically everything he did—getting top grades in school—and excelling in sports—primarily baseball and basketball. He admits that if he were only a little taller (instead of his 5’7” adult height) he might have chosen a career as a professional basketball player. Fortunately for the American public, he was drawn to medicine and discovered that he enjoyed caring for critically sick people. “Growing up in a household where both parents were strongly motivated to care for others had a profound influence on my career choice,” he says, as well as the training by his Jesuit school masters that one’s emphasis should not be on personal gain but on service to the public, no matter what profession you choose.
In addition to caring for and making a difference in the lives of individual patients, Anthony discovered he had a strong interest in immunology research, and his next career move was to join the NIAID (National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases). Before long he was named its director and become internationally known in the 1980s when America—and the world—were hit with the heretofore unknown HIV virus. Dr. Fauci discusses in great detail the steps that were taken by American and world agencies to identify the disease, control the symptoms, develop effective treatment, prevent transmission of the disease, and finally develop a vaccine. He vividly describes the transition from an AIDS diagnosis being 100% fatal to a time when many with the HIV virus are living happy healthy lives. Dr. Fauci doesn’t mince words when he discusses the controversies surrounding the disease and its treatment. Those involved with AIDS spent an inordinate amount of time dealing with the homophobia that threatened to derail efforts to combat this disease. Sadly, the AIDS pandemic was only the first of the health issues that Dr, Fauci had to deal with. Next came Anthrax, Ebola, SARS, West Nile, Zika, smallpox, influenza, and finally Covid.
Because of his expertise in dealing with critical illness and immunology research, Fauci was invited to serve as an advisor to each of the last seven US presidents. It was in this role that he became known for his ability to calm the nation and explain the scientific and medical facts in a way that the American public could understand. Sadly, Dr. Fauci also became a lightning rod for controversy. While all of the presidents he served appreciated and honored him (with the exception of course of Trump), he often found himself at the center of the controversies involving racism, homophobia, and politics.
It is not surprising that he decided to retire once he reached his eighties, but he will remain the voice of reason and of healing as America and the world face the current health crises and those to come.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 19, 2024Dr. Fauci wrote almost all of this himself with some help editing after he got 80 percent written and I wanted to know whether he wrote it mostly because here is one of the great talents of our lifetimes. He's teaching now at Georgetown U, in medicine and public policy. I think what will be happening there is lots of inspiration, mentoring, friendship, investing in public service and patient care.
The book is going to make you want some variations on Italian food. I found many questions answered that I've had about how Dr. Fauci engaged with others in his remarkable career and with some of the main events for him and that he is known for. There is a lot here I did not know and did not have questions about but now appreciate his sharing.
There is a great lot of good emotional health, good psychological health here, the very foundations for fearless honesty, for lifelong friendships, for loving family and friends.
I congratulate the writer on another task well done. I say thank you for your service but even more for taking the time and effort to tell the story. It's a very fine story indeed.
